FAQ:

I've been thinking about buying a security system, but I don't know much about them. How do they work?
A security system starts with a control panel. Usually located in a closet or a basement, the control panel contains the "brain" of the security system, and essentially operates as a central computer. Many sensors connect to the control panel from locations of importance selected in your home. If your security system is armed and the sensors detect a problem, they transmit signals to the control panel. The control panel automatically dials the central monitoring station where the proper authorities are notified.

What does the keypad do?
You operate your security system by entering your security code into the keypad. Generally located at entry doors the keypad can arm and disarm with push-button ease and literally put security at your family's fingertips! Good features to look for include illuminated keys to provide you with greater visibility at nighttime, easy-to-read English displays that spell out your system's status at a glance, and one-touch function keys that provide single-button operation for arming, disarming or emergencies. Most keypads even offer convenient additional user codes to give friends, neighbors or service people access to your home.

What are magnetic contacts?
Magnetic contacts are two-piece devices used to safeguard windows and doors. One part of the contact is a switch installed in the window or door jam; the other piece contains a magnet and is placed in the window or door itself. Any shift in contact with the switch results in an alarm.

What is a PIR?
A passive infrared motion detector (PIR) is an electronic security device that detects intruders by "sensing" motion or body heat in the area being protected. Most PIRs are designed to be used when your family is away from home or when no one will be passing through the area guarded by a PIR device.

I have pets! Does that mean I can't use PIR technology?
Absolutely not. Recent innovations in security technology have resulted in the creation of "pet immune" motion detectors-allowing dog and cat lovers to enjoy the same level of protection they would receive with a standard PIR. These state-of-the-art sensors provide "pet immunity" for animals weighing up to 100 lbs. Pet immune PIRs allow your pet to move about freely but can still detect an intruder's movement.

Speaking of sensors, how are the "Acoustic/Glassbreak" sensors operated?
"Acoustic" glassbreak sensors, usually mounted on ceilings or walls, work by "listening" for the sound of breaking glass in a window. "Shock" glassbreak detectors are mounted on the window and "feel" the shock of breaking glass. This kind of advanced wireless technology can provide shatter and shock protection for your windows Many times intruders are "sensed" and an alarm wull sound while they are still outdoors. This is often enough to send a burglar running!

I already have a battery-operated smoke detector, so why would I need one installed as part of my security system? What's the difference?
Since you own a smoke detector, you realize what an important safety measure this device is. Smoke detectors are highly effective in preventing loss of life and property. However, there are differences between the "stand alone" or battery-operated smoke detector you would buy at your local hardware store and one installed as part of your home security system. "Stand alone" detectors are not connected to other security equipment or warning devices. A smoke detector connected to your security system offers more protection because it is monitored by a central station. If there is a fire the detector sets off an alarm and sends a signal to the control panel. The control panel dials the central station where the operator notifies the fire department. Only monitored smoke detectors provide automatic notification of authorities when you or your family are asleep, not at home or unable to reach the phone.

I've been hearing so much about these "wireless" security devices. Do they really work well, and are they easy to use?
Yes. Technological advances have led to the development of wireless electronic security products and their effectiveness has been proven time and again over the years. Their rock-solid stability and long battery life make them a popular choice among homeowners and dealers alike. They give installers the flexibility they need to overcome obstacles such as brick walls, cement floors and cathedral ceilings without drilling holes. Folks today enjoy the convenience of remote control devices, and the security industry has responded! User-friendly wireless security provide the dual benefits of superior performance and ease of operation. Wireless keypads allow you to activate and de-activate your security system with the touch of a button, and can even be programmed so that a young child can operate it with ease. Similar in size to a remote car alarm key it will fit right on your keychain and the press of a single button lets you control your system, lights and appliances-eliminating the need for codes. Another hot item gaining popularity is the interactive phone module. By adding the phone module to your home security system, you'll have remote control access from any touch-tone or cellular phone-from your office, on the road, or anywhere in the world. Easily arm, disarm or check the status of your system, turn your lights on or off-you can even control your thermostat and air conditioner!

III. Fire Alarms
The threat of fire exists in every room of your home, from frayed wires to kitchen accidents to an unattended dryer. In a matter of seconds, fire can consume a room and spread quickly throughout a premises. Consider the following statistics:

  • Home fires are the fifth leading unintentional cause of injury and death in the United States.
  • Home fires rank as the first cause of death for children under the age of 15 at home.
  • Roughly 80 percent of all fire deaths occur where people sleep, such as in homes, dormitories, barracks, or hotels. The majority of fatal fires occur when people are likely to be less alert, such as nighttime sleeping hours.
  • Two of every five fires that kill young children are started by children playing with fire.
  • Approximately 900 older adults die in fires annually.

IV. 24-Hour Monitoring

Peace of Mind, 24 hours a Day

Who's watching your home while you're on vacation, asleep, or at work? With SpectraCom Technologies’ monitored security system, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing Guardian's UL Approved Central Station is always monitoring your home 24hrs each day.

Some facts about Guardian's central monitoring station:

  • UL Certified
  • Not one, but two standby power generators (natural gas and diesel fuel)
  • Operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Managers on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • State-of-the-art software
  • State-of-the-art hardware with full redundancy

Some Common Questions about Guardian's Central Station and Monitoring Capabilities

Does Guardian own a central station? Or does the company sub-contract monitoring?
Guardian owns and operates its central monitoring station. Guardian never subcontracts monitoring duties to other central stations, as other security companies often do.

Does Guardian's central station have power backup?
Yes. Guardian's central station standby power is continuously tested and audited every week under the strict guidelines of Underwriters Laboratories.

How are my calls routed?
Your system's signals are received through a telecommunications system that operates on high-priority, fiber-optic 800-phone lines.

What exactly is a central monitoring station?
Security systems send their signals over your telephone line to a central monitoring station-the facility that acts as the link between your home and the police, fire department, and emergency response authorities. A central station is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by highly skilled operators trained to respond to emergencies. The station operator alerts the proper authorities and dispatches help.

If the central monitoring station is notified via my phone line,
how can I keep my family safe if the line is cut or out of service?

That's a valid concern. In the event that your phone line fails or is cut, there are back-up services that work in tandem with your home security system to ensure your safety-the most popular being an easy-to-install cellular radio service that contacts the central station in the event of an emergency. The only additional equipment required would be a small radio transmitter that connects to the control panel of your security system.

V. New Construction > section i.
Structured Wiring:

Structured Wiring: Wire is cheap. Opening walls is expensive.

What is structured wiring?
Structured wiring is a method of providing the communications infrastructure of your home in a well organized, easy to understand, and thorough way to provide a general solution to your present and future wiring needs. Rather than run a coax here, and a Cat 5 there, and another coax somewhere else as you guess at the future needs, the structured approach is to consistently run a full bundle of wire to every significant room. The full structured bundle often consists of two Cat 5 cables and two coax cables.

How does it work?
As a starting point, it is useful to think of a structured wiring system in terms of your house's electrical system. Electricity flows into your house through a main power cable. This cable connects to a circuit breaker box, where it is separated and sent down smaller electric lines. These lines wind their way through your walls, ultimately ending at power outlets placed throughout your home. You then plug devices into the outlets and use them.

A structured wiring system functions similar to this. All external data lines (such as cable television, telephone, or Internet) come into the house and are connected directly to a central control box. This box is usually the size of a large electric circuit breaker panel, and is placed in a similar location, such as in the basement or a utility closet. Within the control box, each incoming signal is split and sent down wires to multiple rooms in the house.
